Review

First I have to mention that I love the cover. I liked the world building, it was a good beginning to a fantasy series. There's political intrigue and betrayal, and plot twists all good ingredients for a great fantasy. Although everything about this book was impressive, I have to say I was a bit disappointed. It was not as epic as I thought it would be, I feel like there was something missing for me. It's a middle of the road fantasy read for me but I think many fantasy readers would enjoy it and book two is promising. I am looking forward to book 2. This is debut novel and in no way does this seem like it, the author seemed like a seasoned writer who transported readers to an interesting world with complex characters and promises of an even better book 2.

Lira has a cool gift, she can touch people and see their souls and through that she can see their memories. I did fee like Lira and Reyker had chemistry and it was clear that they cared for each other. Other characters were also written very well. Their world was brutal and the main characters were put through a lot in this story. At first with the actions of Draki the villain, I got The Darkling feelings but they're not the same. I was so excited for that but he wasn't the charming Darkling, Draki didn't have the same plans, but he is just as evil though. The characters were strong and the plot was good except for everything the characters did something would go wrong and there were always consequences. The story was fast paced and that is something I enjoyed very much.

Review

This was my first book from Donna Grant and I really enjoyed it. I think I would have benefited  from reading previous books out of curiosity of the previous plot points and it is definitely not a stand alone. I felt a connection to the story and the plot was good. I liked reading about their world and I enjoyed reading about all of the different characters. This is the first book that has had so many characters and I enjoyed it. Even though this is not the first book in the series, things were well explained about the history of the King Dragons. I appreciate that in a story.

What I liked:

The main male protagonist was a nice guy that was troubled by things going on in his main land. I love reading books that have a different world as well as the one we live in, it's interesting to see what the characters do in each world. 

Characters: I loved V, he is a Dragon King who was sleeping for many many years and that gave me a vibe of Sleeping Beauty and that made me like the story even more. As Aurora was female and V was male, I liked the role reversal and the little hint of a retelling. And that is one of the things that made this story for me unique. Claire's character I really liked, she seemed like a good girl looking for love, she had many dating mishaps and was not having any luck in the dating world. I felt like she was emotional at times and too attached to a previous guys she was dating, but what it came to V, she was doing things she wouldn't normally do. Not a good girl turned bad, more of a go-getter, and I loved that for her because she was no longer sad, she was more realistic. Claire was very loyal and I admired that about her and it made her relationship with V better and more transparent.   

What I didn't like:

The aspect of having a blog about dating was great, getting advice and sharing experiences is an awesome way to communicate with the dating community, but I could have done without reading what was actually written on the blog. I don't think it was necessary for the story and it just made the book a little bit longer. The ending wasn't wrapped up in a pretty bow like I like them but it makes me curious and I'm anticipating the next book to see what happens to the characters.

Review

I was really obsessed with Everneath when I read it years ago. I thought this series was going to be an epic Hades and Persephone retelling and it wasn't. Although it did have similarities to the myth it wasn't what I was expecting. I was also hoping for a really good love triangle and to find out if it was you'll have to read this series. The story started off a little bit slow but I was never bored because there was always something going on. About half way was when the story really started to take off. It was really interesting to see how the Everneath was built and how the characters navigated in it. This book has adventure and betrayal and I'm glad I read it. In this book a lot was explained about the world and different characters. I'm interested to see how the series ends in the next books, if I get the answers I'm looking for.

Spoiler Section

This book was not what I was expecting. Going into this series I was under the impression that it was a Hades and Persephone retelling, that is not what it looked like from the ending of book one though. And reading this book clarified to me that it is not. I was still rooting for Cole and hoping for the retelling I was expecting but I didn't get it. So I think I would have enjoyed this book and love story better if the retelling part was not mentioned.

Let's start with the good stuff *wink*. The intimate moments are so hot the sheets are on fire! I think those were the best parts because I was having issues with the plot. 

I liked that Ethan was gentle, passionate, loving, and protective. This book reminds me of the Fallen Too Far Series by Abbi Glines. Ethan reminds me of Rush but Rush is way more alpha. I liked Ethan's personality, he didn't give up and he always wanted to make things better for Chloe, I loved the way he cared about her. And Chloe, she was so frustrating because she would fight for the stupidest things with Ethan.

I had some trouble with this book as well as the first one, I think they're too long and if it were shorted I would enjoy it more. And also the fights that they would have didn't seem that much of a big deal to me, I think it was unnecessary drama. I also didn't like the best friend, she was all over the place, she would like Ethan when things were good but she would hate him when Chloe was in a fight with him and this happened like four times. Another thing, I didn't think it was believable for her to forgive him for all his secrets. I think all the secrets should have come all at the same time and not little by little.

I enjoyed this book, the plot and the writing was really good. I feel like the story flowed well and it kept my attention. I liked Genevieve and Cole, they had a good thing going but as always secret can tear anything apart. Genevieve was a bad-ass detective, she was the only one that was a woman so she didn't have it easy working with only men. Her boss had it in for her, I hated him because he was so rude. She also had a stoker she had to deal with as well as a case she was working on. Nobody would believe her that some murders were connected so she had a lot on her plate. 

Cole was just trying to find his sister's killer and he was hoping that Genevieve could help him. I felt like he was honest, he just wanted answers and redemption for his sister. 

There was also lots of sex in this book and it was hot, it might turn some readers off and I didn't mind it but at times I thought there was too much going on with all the intimacy and the investigation Genevieve had going on, it was too much but there was also something missing for me and I can't put my finger on it. When the killer was revealed, I hadn't seen it coming.

Mallory was running away from her fiance because he was abusive, selfish, and a drug addict. She was pretty much terrified of him the whole book, thinking that he was going to find her. With no other option, she stayed with her sister who inherited her late husband's fortune and with that she built a business. To the general public it was a spa but to specific members it was a sex club and they taught naughty classes. In one part of the book, Mallory sees her sister-in-law in the spa part of the building, so she runs not knowing where she's going and ends up going to the sexy part and falls into a sex education class. One the funniest things I have ever read! I swear! Mallory then has to explain why she picked that class since she was late, but she wasn't late, she just stumbled into that class. So she says that she wants to learn the fine art of... I can't say cause it's too naughty and the most hilarious thing ever. OMG so funny. 

Anyway, Mallory gets to have a bodyguard/babysitter because she's not into the naughty side of the house so Max is there to show her the sights and to keep her entertained. I love the way that he is there for her emotionally and he won't let anyone hurt her. At first it was just a job to him to look out for her, but then he started to get curious about her. He liked the fact that Mallory wasn't part of his world, he wanted to teach her. Couture was the name that people saw on the outside, fashion, models, and beautiful clothes. Now Club Inferno was only for the VIP guests, (the naughty part) Max was a dom and he was also an instructor of a few classes, among them was kickboxing and the only class Mallory actually wanted to take. I really enjoyed seeing Mallory and Max's relationship flourish,he wanted to take it slow with her and was careful not to push her. I also liked that he was a dom that didn't participate, just watched. There were many explicit scenes, nothing too crazy. I loved taking the journey with Mallory as Max did different things to her and seeing her reactions to them. 

The banter between Mallory and her sister Colleen was hilarious. They teased each other to no end, nothing hurtful just fun. And the story behind the dolphin bushes was so funny, obviously there's more to that story that Mallory later figured out. Even though the sisters weren't close Colleen would do anything to keep Mallory safe, it was very endearing, reading between the lines of their jokes. They became close and learned new things about each other.   

The ending I thought was so sweet, Max was so thoughtful and creative. He led Mallory into his world and to her surprise she liked it and wanted more, when Max already couldn't get enough of her.
He wanted Mallory and he didn't care that she came with drama, to him she was special, to be treasured. And he did just that. 

I enjoyed the dual POVs, I wanted to know what Max did in his spare time and I wanted to know his secrets which I found out, and let me tell you, he has a big heart, not only for Mallory. He had compassion when it wasn't deserved, but that was his personality. I couldn't help but love him.

I thought this story was cute and fluffy, although it had it's naughty moments but nothing dark. This story is about Carly and Macon, two roommates trying to fight the attraction they have for each other until they can't anymore and they just collide together. I liked both of these characters and I loved that there were other characters from the previous book, Colin and Maddy. Colin is Carly's brother. They were a lot in this book and I liked that because that way I feel like the author didn't forget about the other characters. I like how they all have a close nit relationship, they're there for each other. 

Carly and Macon tried fight their feelings toward each other and he even acted like the 'big brother' by saving her from random guys that he thought weren't any good for her. Yeah right big brother, he was a jealous alpha with anger issues, but that's how I like them. I like reading about how a guy feels about his girl, so I loved that this book was dual POV. Not all books are and when it's only the girl's POV I feel like I'm missing something. 

I liked Carly and Macon's chemistry together, I feel like they were a good match and could really make it. I also liked them as characters individually, Macon was very supportive of Carly and did sweet things to show that he cared for her, I thought that was cute. The plot and the writing was also good, no complaints.

Rafe was heartbroken for a good fraction of this book, when I found out that his ex and the one he's trying to get over was married the whole time he was with her, I did not like that. I think it took away from the story. It really ruined it for me. At first Rafe didn't know that she was married but when he found out they still spent time together until she finally broke it off. So after that Rafe was heartbroken and like he hated himself because she was married and had kids. What bothered me was that he didn't end it with her after he found out, yeah he felt bad while he was with her but not bad enough to give her up.

Other than that, I liked Rafe, his family was full of guys and they all loved fiercely. I really liked that, it's like they find their woman and love her forever. They loved deep and forever, that's why he was so broken up about his ex, he really cared about her. The man was seriously swoon worthy towards Fallon, the things that he would say to her and his feelings were very permanent, he wasn't going anywhere away from her.

But the fact that his ex was married and he knew about it cancelled out the fact that he loved so deeply, thus the three star rating. And that made me sad because I really liked his character and it was ruined for me. 

I really liked Fallon, she was independent , the boss, great taste in fashion, and didn't take crap from anyone. I like how she stood up for herself and told people off like she owned the building. Quite frankly one of the best characters I've read in awhile. She reminded me of Ivey in Play It Safe by Kristen Ashley. She was the owner of a burlesque club and she danced every once in awhile. Her story was really heartbreaking, something she couldn't control and it was so sad, I cried when I found out the secret she had for years. Her parents kicked her out as a teen, she had nowhere to go and they didn't care, they just cared about their family name. The end was also emotional for me. I also liked the other characters, especially Rafe's family, his brothers and his father. I loved that they were all so tight and really cared about each other.

If you don't mind the aspect of Rafe being with a married woman or if you can overlook it, I think this is a really great book with wholesome characters. The plot was really good and Rafe was so swoon worthy, I loved his personality very alpha.
