Interview With Rachel M. Raithby Author OF Lexia The Deadwood Hunter Series

  Published: July 23, 2013

    Book Description

Lexia thought she was normal, ordinary...

Lincoln thought he'd spend the rest of his life seeking revenge...

What would you do if the person you loved was your enemy?

When Lexia snuck out one night to go to a party, she hardly expected to be attacked by vampires. Much less be able to kill them with her bare hands.

That night triggers events Lexia can't escape and soon she struggles to keep up a facade around her friends and family.

And then there's Lincoln; she finds herself irresistibly drawn to him. But Lexia senses he wants something more dangerous than a simple romance.

Lincoln has secrets and what she learns changes her life forever.

A story of love, loss and betrayal.

Only one thing is certain, Lexia and Lincoln’s lives will never be the same again.

How many books are there going to be in the Deadwood Hunter Series?
There will be 3 books in The Deadwood Hunter Series; the second is due out Dec13/Jan14. I also have a few ideas for spin off novels from the series with some of the other characters.

What are some of your ideas for the upcoming books?
The next Deadwood Hunter book will focus on Lexia’s darker side and her struggle as she deals with everything that has happened to her so far, you’ll meet new characters and people from Lincoln’s past, you will also learn more about Lincoln’s parents. You will be seeing more of Lexia’s ‘delightful’ mother and probably be wishing you could just jump into the book and strangle her yourself!

I also have a YA novel plotted and in writing right now, this is set in a completely new world full of magic, the story follows Analea; a Seer, her brother Ajax and Rhys a Dragon Warrior, there will be lots of mystery and action in this book too.

Are you planning on including other supernatural beings in the upcoming books?
There will be more shifters, wolf and feline and of course more hunters, some good, some bad! There may also be a few vampires in need of decapitating.

What kinds of books do you read?
I read a lot of paranormal books and fantasy, I’ve also started to read contemporary romance and new adult and I always love a bit of erotic romance. My favourite books are the Harry Potter Books, Twilight books, Psy-changling books, I liked Slave to sensation and kiss of snow best J

Thanks for having me and I’m so pleased you liked Lexia, can’t wait to hear what you think of the others in the series!

Thanks so much Rachel I can't wait for your upcoming books.

Blog Tour: Excerpt From The Hobbes Family By Dan O'brien

Welcome to the first day of the Hobbes Family blog tour. It will run until September 2nd and will feature excerpts and new author interviews each day. But first, here is the obligatory blurb about the novel to settle you into this strange world:

The world had ended abruptly and without warning. How will a family navigate a world that seems bent on destroying them? Follow them in this exciting new serial adventure.

A few questions for the author:

Is there anything you can’t let go of but you know you should?

There was a time when this would entailed a vast list indeed. However, I have become much better at letting the past stay in the past. Right now I just have goals and benchmarks that I want to reach. The past can wait.

Do you remember anyone you hated 10 years ago? Does it matter now?

Not in the slightest. There are few things in life that are worth carrying with you. Hate is most definitely not one of them. I am always reminded of the following saying when I consider carrying anger: “Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” ~ Buddha

What makes you happier, forgive someone or hate someone forever?

I would be the happiest if people thought about their actions before I had to choose either of these options. At this point in my life, I would say forgiving someone is better in the long run; this point is, of course, moot if the transgression is such that I could not forgive.

What are you worrying about and what’s the difference if you stop worrying about it?

I am currently worrying about whether or not I will be an effective professor. I am teaching my first 300-level class this fall and I have a healthy concern about my efficacy. Once I have finished organizing the class and materials, my worry will fade away.

Here be an excerpt for your enjoyment:

The world had ended, or at least slowed for a spell, when the outbreak claimed the consciousness of humanity. There was a brief moment before the proverbial sky fell when many people thought the entire idea was just the shenanigans of the ne’er-do-wells who were pulling a fabulous hoax on the world. The first day brought skepticism and curiosity. Pop culture had engrained in people the fear of the unknown and a fair amount of preparation in the event of anything resembling a zombie plague.

This sense of a participatory chain of events signaling the end of Hobbes’ civilization was far more abrupt than for which many were ready. People had hoarded and stockpiled. Nary a person could be found who did not have an assault rifle or nail-bat prepped and ready for the staggering undead.

It was the deed, however, that proved far more difficult for most. Even though necrotic flesh and a certain vacancy behind the eyes announced the undead to those passable as living, it was the possibility that this momentary lapse of humanity could be overcome. This idea quickly faded as the disease spread, claiming metropolitan areas and rural areas alike.

By the end of the first week, skepticism had turned into panic. Stores were raided and cities were emptied as quickly as possible.

Roads were congested with cars fleeing to a transient safe haven just beyond the boundaries of memory and the known. The problem with being surrounded by water is that eventually you hit a coast, no matter which direction you drove. Cars were abandoned as power grids wavered and then went silent. Soon, the nights were as dark as the inside of a coffin and the days unperturbed by the sounds of the city.

Philosophers had for the majority of human civilization discussed what man would be like in this state of nature. Great minds debated the merits and pitfalls of a world unperturbed by the guiding force of norms and mores. It appeared that something drawn from nightmares and the fiendish, albeit amusing, minds of writers who envisioned a world where the rebuilding of a civilization was juxtaposed against a frightening dystopia burdened by moral ambiguity and vagary of purpose. The great apocalypse proved to be a grand thought experiment, much to the chagrin of everyone.

Gabby’s overcome more than most can even begin to imagine, and she’s barely out of college. With a visible scar that reminds her and the world that she beat the odds, it’s impossible for her to put everything behind her, no matter how hard she tries.
As she begins working at her family’s company, she buries herself in the safety of the corporate world. No extra time, no life, no relationships. She begins to let him show her what life could be, if she really lived it.
Neither want their past to define their future, but sometimes destiny has something else in store. It’s only as their love grows and secrets are revealed that they realize a devastating connection from their past might actually tear them apart.

Excerpt From Entagled Online

Kendra's Post

A darkly romantic city, like something out of a fairy tale, deep underground.  A small band of fallen angels, marked for death by Hell and now reluctantly working for Heaven.  And of course, vampires.  These are the ingredients of my Hearts of the Fallen series, and I’m excited to be spending the release day of the second book, THE DEMON’S DESIRE, with you!

The stories in my series all involve Terra Noctem, the magically protected underground city I mentioned.  It’s a place right out of fantasy, a protected city carved from stone and the heart of the supernatural world just out of sight of our own.  It’s ruled by Justin, the vampire king, who is assisted by a council made up of leaders from their respective races.  It’s generally pretty peaceful…or, well, it was, until they gave a bunch of unruly fallen angels sanctuary.  And in this story, the problems one fallen angel has brought with him endanger Terra Noctem in general, and one vampire in particular—Dru, the sister of the king.

I love Dru.  She’s strong, savvy, an instrumental behind-the-scenes force to be reckoned with in the governance of her city and her people for two thousand years.  And despite all the struggles she’s been through in her long life, she’s never lost her sense of humor and appreciation for simple pleasures.  The one thing she’s wary of is romance.  She was badly burned by it once, and the lesson she took from that episode was that eternal love is fraught with too many problems to even attempt it.  Her solution, since she’s not a particularly solitary creature, has been to take only temporary human lovers who are no danger to her heart.  And her resolve on that issue never cracked until the day Meresin of the Fallen walked into Terra Noctem.

Meresin is a character who intrigued me right from the start, before I had written a word of the series.  All of his brothers have what you could politely call “issues,” since, let’s face it, it takes a lot to get to the point where even Lucifer is taking an active interest in wiping you from the face of the earth…especially when you’ve spent thousands of years as one of his loyal lords in Hell.  Meresin, though, is singular even among the outcasts.  He has the power of lightning, able to hurl bolts of destruction at anyone who threatens him—and he often feels threatened, which has created big problems in the city.  He’s volatile, moody, quiet, and tormented by the secrets of his past.  The one person who seems to be able to get through to him is Dru.  She frustrates him, fascinates him, and that goes both ways.  But Meresin knows he has even less to offer than his fallen brothers, and has made a point of keeping his distance, not just from her but from everyone.  That is, until he’s presented with an ultimatum from Heaven that will make or break him.  Forced to accept Dru’s help, Meresin slowly discovers that he may have a future worth fighting for after all.  The only question, as he and Dru make a harrowing journey to confront his past, is whether it’s already too late.

Thank you so much for having me here today, and I hope you all enjoy the book!

Isn't she awesome? A way better description that I could ever right haha. Thank you for a great post!

My Review

I really enjoyed this book. This is the second book I read from Kendra and I love her books. Characters from the previous book were mentioned but some didn't make an appearance, but I still liked that they were included. This book is the a companion novel but also in the same series if that makes sense. I feel like this is a Beauty And The Beast retelling almost. There's this really powerful Demon/Fallen Angel that is crazy dangerous. He has no regard for his life let alone anybody else's. Meresin has the power to command lightning and boy did he like to zap people (particularly vampires that pissed him off). Ever since Dru kissed him as a prank one time, he's bound to stay away from her, but what he doesn't know is that she liked the kiss just as much as he did. They both have feelings for each other but can't find the courage to tell each other. There is a steamy sex scene but I think it was also sweet. I liked the adventure Meresin and Dru went on, it helped them figure themselves out and also learn about each other. I also liked the end, I think it was sweet and perfect for them.

5/5 From me because I couldn't stop reading it, the story was so interesting and I really fell for the characters. I love how they felt about each other and how it all came together in the end.

About the Author:

Kendra Leigh Castle

Kendra Leigh Castle was born and raised in the far and frozen reaches of Northern New York, where there was plenty of time to cultivate her love of reading thanks to the six-month-long winters.  Sneaking off with selections from her mother’s vast collection of romance novels came naturally and fairly early, and a lifelong love of the Happily Ever After was born.  After graduating from SUNY Oswego (where it also snowed a lot) with a teaching degree, Kendra ran off with a handsome young Navy fighter pilot and has somehow accumulated three children, three dogs, and one enormous cat during their many moves.

While stationed in a remote corner of the Nevada desert, Kendra penned her first romance, and a career often spent working in fuzzy slippers and pajamas was born.  Her work has garnered both critical praise and award nominations, but the best part has been connecting with readers who share her love of dark romance (not to mention heroes with sharp, pointed teeth).  Kendra currently lives in Maryland, and can usually be found curled up with her laptop and yet another cup of coffee working on her next book.  She loves to hear from her readers, and can be contacted via email or her Facebook page.

My Review

This book is the type of book I love to read! It was so great and I really enjoyed it. I read it in two days, it was so addicting and I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down. I was so impressed with Kendra's writing, I hadn't read anything from her before and I was totally floored. This was the first angel book I've read. I love how Kendra doesn't focus on the villain(s) that much, yes they're there but in the background. Sofia has to be protected against vampires who want to kill her because she witnessed her friend being bitten by one. Phenex, a fallen angel watches over her from afar until a vampire gets too close and that's when Sofia finds out she was being watched by someone that's trying to kill her and someone that's trying to protect her. Sofia remembers him from the bar she went to where she heard him sing. She felt an impossible attraction to him. I could only imagine what it would be like to hear an angel sing. Anyway, lol, the characters were funny at times; I heard myself literally laughing out loud. I liked the fact that each of the angels could turn into animals, that was interesting. Phenex could obviously turn into a phoenix and one of his brothers could turn into a snake.

The romance between Phenex and Sofia was great, they had intense chemistry but there's always the question of how permanent the relationship would be since he's immortal and she's mortal. Phenex wanted to be with her forever but Sofia didn't want to be anything supernatural; and there comes the problem and the disagreements.

Oh my God the ending of this book was so sweet and beautiful and I could not get enough of it. Sofia awakened so many different feelings in Phenex, it wasn't just love; it was things he hadn't experienced in a long time and it was so endearing seeing someone come out of his shell and what was left was someone so beautiful. I really have no words and I can't even do it justice.  It was just utterly amazing. 5/5 stars, I recommend this book to every adult because there is come adult content.

Thanks again to Kendra for her post and check out these books among others that she's written. I can't wait to read more of her books.
