There was little rest for Hank again that night.  His heart and his mind were being pulled in different directions.  He had made commitments to Max and Oliver, then to Captain Stein, and now to Roberta.  He had always been trusted by everyone, a pillar of integrity.  Now, he would surely destroy that reputation.  As he tossed and turned, and scolded himself for getting himself into such a quandary, his thoughts kept going back to Roberta, warm thoughts full of wonder and excitement.  But, as the night progressed, doubts began to creep into his head.

Hank couldn’t deny how he felt; he felt fantastic, incredible.  He had met the girl of his dreams---love at first sight.  He couldn’t wait to see her again.  She was everything he had always imagined she would be, everything he hoped for in a woman.  Yet, he began to wonder, is this real?  Could it be possible for two people to be in love when they’ve only known each other for two days?  Was he being foolish?  Had the events of the past five months and his absence from the comforts of home made him vulnerable in a dangerous way?  A frightful pang of fear shot through his gut as he thought: Is she just using me? Does she see me as her way out of confinement? Am I being fooled by her? Maybe she doesn’t care about me at all; she only needs me to get what she really wants.  Why should I trust her?  I don’t really know her.  Oh, what a fool I must be to fall for the first beautiful woman who shows an interest in me, who caresses me.  Am I that vulnerable?  Am I that foolish?

Thoughts of Roberta dazzled and confused him; nothing in his young life had ever left him so unsure of himself.  No amount of concentration overcame the cascade of emotions flooding his chest.  He tossed and turned long into the night, soaked his pillow through with his sweat, though he wasn’t warm, and felt his pulse exploding his temples; alternating between visions of pure, romantic love and sheer foolishness.  The pull on his heart skidded back and forth like a tug of war.  That is…until he recalled his mother’s words, spoken on his eighteenth birthday, just after a high school sweetheart informed him that another man had won her heart.

Hank, you are such a precious son.  I adore you.  I am sad when you are sad, but you must know this pain you feel will pass.  Sometimes love is fleeting, it may disappear as quickly as it appears.  You have your whole life ahead of you.  I know you will meet the woman who will love you completely, and for your lifetime.  I have no doubt.  Love between a man and a woman cannot be easily defined; love comes in many forms and is never the same for everyone.  Almost always love charges into your life like a cosmic experience, even magical, it is so difficult to predict or understand.  Sometimes that special feeling in your heart really is true love---sometimes not.  When love comes suddenly, we can be swept off our feet.  It’s a dazzling experience that confuses us.  That’s often called love at first sight, but it’s never really love at first sight.  If it happens to you, don’t take it for granted, it’s very special and you won’t want to lose it.  It’s one of the best feelings you will ever have, and I believe the best beginning for true love.

Don’t be deceived, true love has to be built; it takes a lot of hard work and may take a very long time.  When two people stop working on their love, it fades, no matter if it’s the first month, the first year, the tenth or the twenty-fifth.  There will always be difficulties and complications, that’s how life is, not just marriage.  Use those difficulties to work on making your marriage stronger.  Don’t expect not to have challenges, welcome them and be ready to take them on together.  Everything really worthwhile in your life will require hard work.  Your marriage is the one very most worthwhile jewel you will ever have.

Laying silently in the darkness, eyes wide open, thinking warm thoughts of his mother, a smile came across his face.  Of course, he thought, mother is right.  I have to work on it.  Tomorrow I’ll have to find out if Roberta truly feels the same way about me.  Sleep finally came.

He should have been exhausted the next morning, with little sleep and tormented the whole night through with all his mixed emotions, but his adrenalin had taken over.  Hank needed to get things resolved, and though he wasn’t sure how to do that, he needed to attack his demons head on.  By the time he met with Oliver and Max in the evening he wanted to have his life back on track.  Since he was drafted there had not been a dull day in Hank’s life.  He never knew quite what to expect, and that day would be no different.  It would begin with his report to Captain Stein.

Hank was surprised to see the Captain waiting for him.  Stein motioned Hank to his office as soon as Hank appeared in the doorway.  Hank’s curiosity was aroused.

“Hank, we have to release everyone except the SS Officers.  The staff and family are being released as soon as possible.   We’ll have 30 days to hold the officers and unless we can get enough evidence they participated in war crimes we’ll have to release them too!  Something about the Geneva Convention says we can’t hold them unless we have sufficient evidence to take them to trial.  It’s foolish as far as I’m concerned.  What kind of fair trial did the millions of dead Jews get?”

Hank was stunned again.  His first emotion was that he was losing Roberta, but his first thought was that might be best.  He had to set his feelings aside and listen to Stein without revealing his feelings.

“I’m sorry, sir.  I know how important this is to you.  It really would be a shame if guilty men went free.”

“Ya, well, there’s nothing we can do about it but work our butts off to get the evidence we need to hold the bastards.  That’s our job, and by God, we’re going to make sure every last one of them hangs for what they’ve done.  Did you get anything out of the girl?”

“I thought I was really close…I mean…I think she was beginning to trust me.  I needed more time; maybe a few more days, but I’m not sure she knew anything.”

“Come on, Corporal, of course she knows things.  I’ll bet she knows plenty.  We’re losing a good opportunity by letting them all go.  It makes our job harder.”

“What will we do now?”

“We’ll get busy interrogating the officers.  The British have been at it for weeks.  They have files on all of them.  The Russians are sending men to help too, and we’re getting some young Army lawyers by next week.  Today, you and I are going out there to go through files.  We’ll make a list of the ones that look like they were in charge, in some position of leadership, the higher the better, then we’ll start meeting with them.  I want to get the top guys.”

Hank didn’t know what to think.  His emotions all melted together in a jumble of confusion.  All he could do was follow orders for the moment, until he could sort through all the feelings bombarding him.

Within a few minutes he and Stein were on their way to the compound, where they came upon a blur of activity.  Those who were being released were jubilant as groups of them gathered in the streets to celebrate.  There was pitched cheering, yet, others pushed against the fence separating them from officers, loved ones and former employers who they would be leaving behind.  There was sadness and tears, as well as questions about what may lay ahead for each of them, the uncertainty for those who were released to communities that may not still exist, and for those who remained in custody, facing the possibility of imprisonment or death.

As Stein and Hank walked into the officer’s compound, Hank did his best to keep Stein from seeing him looking among those being released through the fence.  In spite of his doubts, his heart told him he was in love and he was growing desperate about losing Roberta so soon, thinking she could be gone forever, and wishing he could know for sure if what they had begun was truly love, or whether he was just a fool.  They were moving too quickly for him to see clearly.  He couldn’t find her.  They were up the steps and into the meeting hall, leaving behind any chance he might see her again.  He was numb, unaware of anything going on around him.

“Hank, Hank, come on, get moving.  Pay attention!”  Stein gave him a nudge toward the stairway leading to a room above, where they spent the rest of the morning poring through files, assessing information that had been gathered by the British, looking for clues to help them decide which officers they would interrogate first.  Stacks of files were set aside, awaiting the lawyer’s arrival.  Hank couldn’t focus his attention; all he could think about was that he may be losing the one person who was right for him, the one he would commit his life to.  Convicting German criminals wasn’t important to him at that moment.

By noon Stein was satisfied they had enough files to get started.  They were loaded in the back of the truck and about to leave.

“Captain Stein, I’d like to see if I can find Roberta and make an appeal to her to give us the information you believe she has.  Once she is gone, it will be lost.  I think it’s worth a try.”

“If you think so, Hank.  There can’t be any harm in trying.  In fact, I like your attitude.  Go ahead, get what you can, and jump on another truck heading back later.  I’ll see you in the morning.  Good luck.”

Hank felt relieved that Stein went along with the idea, but he felt a tinge of guilt for taking advantage of Stein’s trust in him.

Trucks loaded with released detainees were rolling out the gate as Hank walked over to the camp.  He ran alongside each truck calling Roberta’s name but got no response.  Others were still loading near a barracks building to the rear.  He ran into the building asking each person he came to about Roberta until an older woman stopped him.

“Yes.  Roberta was here.  But she has gone.”

Hank’s world came to a sudden stop.  He just stood there as people pushed past him toward the trucks.  He lost her.  She was gone.  Maybe she didn’t love him after all.  Maybe she just didn’t need him anymore.  He really didn’t know what to think.  He only knew this was the worst day of his life.

As he walked back toward the gate past the office where he had met with Roberta, the guard who had brought Roberta to the meetings called out to him.

“Corporal!  Corporal Fischer!  Come quickly.  There is someone who wants to see you.”

Hank wouldn’t allow himself to believe it could be her.  He hurried into the building and found the front office area empty, but the door to the room in back was ajar.  He slowly opened the door and there sat Roberta.  She leaped from her chair and into his arms with a scream of delight.

“Oh, Hank, Hank!  I knew you would come for me.  I knew it in my heart!”

“They told me you had left.  I thought you were gone!”

“I couldn’t go.  Where would I go without you now that I have found you?  I love you, Hank, I love you!  I feel like I have loved you since always, and forever.”

Her arms wrapped tightly around his neck and her lips found his.  Her words washed away any doubt.  He had never known such elation.  He was in love.  It was real.  He was sure of it.

“I love you, Roberta.  I love you, too!”

Feature Follow 13

Feature Follow is a weekly blog hop. For more information and to join go to Parajunkee'sblog or Alison Can Read's Blog This weekly feature is all about meeting new bloggers and making new friends. Post a comment on this post saying that you're a follower and I will follow back.

Question of the Week: Recommend some of your favorite back-list books - books that are at least a few years old (I’m thinking 5-10 years old rather than classics)

Twilight (Twilight, #1)    Immortal (Immortal, #1)    The Hollow (The Hollow, #1)

Moon Spell (The Tale of Lunarmorte, #1)   City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)

Twilight was what started it all for me. I wasn't an avid reader before I read it, which was after it came out on DVD. I watched it and immediately bought the book, read it, and bought the rest of the books. I started reading again sometime after Breaking Dawn part 2 came out. Then I read in the order above and I haven't stopped reading since.

How about you guys, what's on your list?

A night by the fire with Chase Fitzgerald

Nikki leaned back and exhaled. The sun was setting over the Pacific Ocean, painting the sky with palettes of orange. The view was amazing, but then again, her husband never did anything that wasn’t spectacular. She reached down and rubbed her stomach, a smiling tugging her mouth. Being married to Chase Fitzgerald has been a thrill of a lifetime.

The sliding door behind her opened and she smiled before his warm lips pressed on her shoulder. “You look stunning, my lady in red,” Chase whispered.

Nikki turned her head and smiled up at him. Two years after saying “I do” on their ranch in Montana and he still took her breath away. Still had the power to reduce her to a drooling mass of needs and wants. He was dressed for the occasion too. His shoulders seemed broader, his body harder, and his sexy smile still promised all sorts of decadence.

“You cleaned up pretty well too, Rancher Fitzgerald.” She captured his lips in a long kiss, the taste of him going straight to her head.

“Quit messing with my head, woman. I have laid out a plan for this evening and we’re following it to the letter. You will not distract me.” He offered her a chocolate-covered strawberry. “My special recipe.”

Nikki grinned. “Oh, your sons and I have been craving these.”

“Don’t you mean my daughters?” Chase knelt by her seat and pressed a kiss on her swollen stomach, gently stroking it.

They’d flown to L.A. to see her gynecologist, but the three-day visit had turned into a week. Every Fitzgerald had insisted they visit them. Tomorrow was a huge family picnic right here at the family estate in Palos Verdes. The Fitzgerald picnics were usually fun, but when you are six months pregnant with twins, crowds got on your nerves fast. At least tonight they had the house to themselves.

“Hey! One of them kicked me,” Chase said.

Nikki laughed. “They probably heard your voice and are saying hello. Boys, behave,” she added, patting her stomach. She didn’t think she could ever be this happy or feel so cherished.

Chase chuckled and proceeded to have a one-sided conversation with their unborn children. “Your Mommy insists you are boys and since she’s never wrong and today is such a special day, I’ll give in. I love you, you little rascals, but we need to come to an understanding before you are born. I saw her first. She’s mine. She can love you, spoil you, or think you can never do wrong, but she’ll always be mine. My first. My last. My everything. One day, if you’re lucky, you might find yourself a gem like her. Now behave for the rest of the evening because tonight is our night. Hers and mine.” He stood. “Come, sweetheart.” He helped Nikki to her feet and led into the house.

Soft jazz greeted her when she stepped inside. In the middle of the bedroom was a table set for two. Dome-shaped lids covered serving plates on two serving carts were on either sides of the table. A bottle of lemon-raspberry fizz sat in a cooler. Two candles flickered on either side of a single rose sitting majestically at the center of the table. This was beyond beautiful.

She heard crackling and turned her head to look. He’d started a fire. A real fire with logs. Warmth drifted from the fireplace, chasing away the spring coolness in the air. But the best part, he’d pulled down the mattress and placed it in front of the fire. She loved making love to him in front of the fire back at home.

“Oh, honey,” Nikki whispered. “This is amazing.”

“You haven’t seen anything yet,” he said, pulling out a chair for her. He planted another kiss on her shoulder before lifting lid after lid and showing her the Valentine’s Day meal he’d prepared for her.

“For appetizer, we have clam oreganata and fried oysters. There’s crouton salad. Side dishes are spinach and mushroom ravioli and truffled mashed potatoes. For the main dish, I thought you’d like something different, crispy rack of lamb with honey and mascarpone. And to finish it, chocolate-raspberry mascarpone bars.”

He’d out done himself. “You are priceless, Chase Fitzgerald.”

“I know.” He flashed his famous sexy smile, then he grew series. He poured the lemon-raspberry fizz in chutes and offered her one. “Here is to you, my love. My safe harbor in a storm. My anchor. Every day I look at you and breathe easier because you chose me to be your husband and agreed to become my wife, my love, the mother of my children. I love you, Nikki Fitzgerald.”

Tears rushed to her eyes. She cried so easily these days. First time it happened, Chase had panicked that he’d hurt her feelings. Turned out pregnancy was playing havoc with her emotions.

She reached out and took his hand and started talking. Chase heard her vows of love and devotion, but it wasn’t her words that had him swallowing and fighting tears of his own. It was the look in her eyes and what they said: she adored him, needed him, and wanted him.

Dinner was great, but he was completely focused on her. Her eyes sparkled underneath thick lashes. Her skin glowed in the flickering light of the candles and the fire behind her created an aura around her, giving her a shimmering incandescence. His fascination with her lips had never waned. She had the sexiest, luscious lips God had ever given a woman. He was madly in love with this breathtaking woman and it never failed to humble him that she felt the same.

“Dance with me,” Chase requested huskily when they were done eating.

“But this…” she patted her stomach.

“Can’t stop me.” He wrapped his arms around her and brought her back to his font. When he crossed his hands over her stomach, she covered them with hers, interlacing their fingers. They swayed gently.

He wanted her and was sure she could feel his erection pressing against her butt. He dropped his head to nuzzle her neck and a tremor shot through her and her breathing changed. Her response to his touch never failed to amaze him. He planned to make love to her slowly and thoroughly. For now, he was content with the foreplay.

She wiggled out of his arms and faced him. The look in her eyes told him foreplay was over. She pushed aside the spaghetti straps of her dress and the red dress floated to her feet. She kicked it out of the way. His eyes crossed. She looked glorious, the flickering fire covering her lush body in a blush of gold.

Wearing nothing but heels, which he still thought pregnant women shouldn’t wear, and a come-hither smile, Nikki planted a hand on her hip and purred, “Happy Valentine’s Day, my husband.”

Damn, she’d just hijacked his plans. Chase stripped in record time, then closed the gap between them and scooped her up. “Happy Valentine’s Day, wife.”

"After you. I rather like following you."
"Don't you mean you like staring at my ass?" She said

"What was I right about before?" She said.
"Your gorgeous ass. I love staring at it."

"You have a dirty mind. I was going to say we could always go for a ride."

"As in riding a horse?" She said.

"You'll see they're not monsters. They are the gentlest creatures God created."

"You mean after dogs, cats, and all domesticated birds."

"I promise to not let one nibble on you. And if you get thrown, I'll kiss it better."  He said.

"I'm placing a lot of trust in you cowboy." She said.

"Thank you. What eased your worries, the promise to protect you or the kiss?" He said.

Definitely the kiss. "None of the above. I can protect myself, and I don't know you well enough to let you kiss any part of my body." She said.

He didn't want her to leave. He wanted her to claim him like no woman had ever claimed him. Wanted to be everything to her. He was falling in love and was powerless to stop himself.

I was so happy to be reading this book. I've worked with Ednah before & I absolutely love her, so when I had the opportunity to be part of a blog tour for her, I'm all in. I really liked this story and I enjoyed that she wrote it in dual perspectives. I'm always interested to know what guys are thinking because they're so different from us, how a big strong man can go down on his knees for the woman he loves it grabs my attention and I'm immediately hooked. That is what I love about this story particularly; Chase was strong and had a powerful persona, he was cocky and always got his way. Although there's a whole other side of him that is compassionate and understanding. You wouldn't think that from his descriptions of what he looks like but he's got such depth, it was really wonderful to see. He cared about his family, employees, and his horses in a way that you wouldn't think possible. That is what makes me fall for a character, how he treats others and how he cares about them, he was loyal to the ones he cared about. I also really like the family dynamic in these books, it's such a big loving family. They all care so much for each other and support each other. Nikki comes along and she puts him in his place, she different, she's strong willed like he is but isn't afraid to tell it to him straight and doesn't care that he's the boss. She called him baboon and that he was arrogant which was a total slap in the face & it was interesting to picture his expressions because it was hilarious.

Chase was living in his ranch in Montana after an unforeseen situation happened, he went into hiding to heal and start over. He was a chef but wanted to change his career path dramatically; he wanted to be a horse breeder. It's a drastic change from living in California where he was successful and rubbed elbows with the famous, to living in a ranch in Montana where everyone knew your business. That's what he wanted though, to live his dream of taking care of horses. Chase's family wanted him to settle down because everyone else was doing that around him. His family had expectations, so his uncle sent a few women to work for Chase but he really just wanted them to really work instead of this whole matchmaking scheme going on. So when Nikki showed up unannounced, he assumed that she was there to "entertain" him like the others tried doing. But she was very serious about her job, she was there to do a website for him, with ulterior motives but they weren't to seduce him. He didn't want her there because she was a distracting woman, beautiful, so he knew that she would get to him and he didn't want that.

"They've already eaten. Do you know what time it is?"

"Yeah, time you learned you don't always get your way." She said.
_______________________

Nikki wasn't going away easily, she was on a mission; she needed to stay in his ranch and figure some things out because her sisters life depended on it and Chase was the only one who could help. He didn't know it but he was her last hope. Nikki was a really spirited character, I liked that she didn't back down from him. She wasn't intimidated or was fainting around him because he was so gorgeous-- not literally but you know what I mean. He always had that affect on women, they either did what he said or wanted to bed him. When Nikki showed no interest, Chase made it a priority to seduce her and prove her wrong. He saw her as a challenge he had to win, but she wasn't falling for it so easily. She had a job to do and investigating to discover, but damn if she thought he was hot.

"You're not my type." She said.
When he lifted his head, she was staring at him as though he'd lost his mind. He probably had. No woman ever rejected him because he didn't fit a mold.
Not her type? He planned to make her take back her words in three days flat.
____________________

It was amusing to see Chase and Nikki's interactions with each other. First he was trying to get rid of her, then he was trying to seduce her, then he was trying to keep her. It was so enchanting to see them falling in love with each other. Chase was a sexy cowboy and Nikki was outspoken and independent. I thought they were really great together and in between the sheets they were smoking hot.

I feel like Ednah really covered all her basics, she was very specific in her descriptions and she put together wholesome characters. She was specific about web designing and horse breeding. I enjoyed reading both sides because I'm thinking about doing some web designing myself, it's always a bonus to have something in common with a character. I also have a few uncles with farms so I know a little bit about that as well. The whole story came together pretty spectacularly.  Chase is hot, sexy, and untamed and Nikki is the one woman he could never get enough of. These are essential ingredients of a scorching hot romance. When Nikki showed up at Chase's ranch it was not a matter of if she would fall for him, it was when she would, because it was inevitable. He was too hot for words.

I was really glad that I got to read Surrender to Temptation. This is another of Ednah's smash hits! She does not disappoints, she's one of my favorite authors and I always look forward to reading her books.

I thought this book was so funny; there were awkward moments, and just plain hilarious moments. I liked this story but I could have had without all the sad, depressing, and down moments; which is most of what I read. I stopped reading at 73% because I couldn’t take it anymore. There’s so much guilt, sadness, and feeling sorry about yourself than I can take in a character. Seriously, and the book ends at 93%? Okay we get the point that they’re broken, they shared a difficult memory and it was only a year before but come on, don’t base a whole book about sadness and grief, I couldn’t take it. They are going to be great together, they had this history because they knew each other since they were kids, and just had a really good connection going before all hell broke loose.

So when are they going to get together? I would have loves to see Pixie and Levi together. How can you base a romance on 20% of the book? I really want to know because a good one would have to be a lot longer to establish anything solid. I think these characters getting together would have been explosive to say the least, but I couldn’t get over all the darkness.
