“There would be no happy ending for us. He was too damaged. I was too broken.”

Two years ago, Lorrie’s mother was murdered. But that wasn’t the end of it. Reeling from the tragedy, Lorrie’s father spiraled into alcohol, depression, and finally suicide.

The two most important people in Lorrie’s life are both gone but she’s still alive.

Trying to recover from the tragedy, Lorrie returns to campus, ready to pick up the pieces of her life. All Lorrie wants is to get back to “normal.”

Then she meets Hunter. The man, the legend, “the Hammer.”

Hunter is a cage fighter who takes on every fight like he’s got nothing to lose. His life is a tangled mess of girls, booze, and fist fights. And while it may seem like he’s got a devil-may-care attitude, he’s fighting a private cage-match with a monster he can’t defeat.

Lorrie knows that Hunter is the exact type of guy she should stay away from, especially in her fragile state, but Hunter has other ideas.

As Hunter and Lorrie grow closer together, will they be able to overcome their pain and heal each other? Or will they both end up wrecked?

Priscilla West is the author of the Sandstone Affair and the Surrender series. She likes to write stories with sassy heroines and strong but flawed heroes.

She enjoys: cuddles, men in suits, eskimo kisses, life-sized teddy bears, and eggs over medium.

I decided I wanted this book because of the cover, it was the first thing that drew me in and then I read the synopsis and I was totally hooked. I read this book in a day, I was so into the story and I was rooting for Lorrie and Hunter the whole time. Lorrie had a lot to deal with, all the drama that happened with her family and coming back to college helped her to try to move on. I felt so bad for everything that she was going through and when the time came when I found out about Hunter, I wish I could be there for him as well. It felt like the characters were real people and their situations could really happen. This book was emotional, it had it's ups and downs. I wanted to laugh at times, I really was lol-ing, and I wanted to cry other times. I was just hoping in the end everything worked out.

In the beginning when Lorrie and Hunter met she wanted them to be friends even though they were both attracted to each other, she felt like she had so much going on that she couldn't handle a relationship on top of it all. Hunter decided he'd play along for the time being, but he was hoping they'd be more than friends sooner or later. I was also curious as to how long Lorrie would fight her feelings for Hunter, she lasted a real long time btw. When I finally got what I wanted (which is romance) they were so good together, I thought they made a really cute couple. I think the end set up the next book really well and I can't wait to read it.

This book reminds me of Remy by Katy Evans because Hunter is a fighter and because of other aspects that the books have in common. So if you've read Remy and liked it, I think you'll like this one. I also recommend this book to anyone that like NA, this is in the stack of really great books I've read this year.

Favorite quotes:

"I won't let it happen. I'm gonna save us both."

"The way you touch me, Lorrie... I've never felt anything like this before. I can't explain it."

"I care about you, Hunter. Can you feel it?"
